Advent means “coming.” While the rest of our culture is celebrating the “end” of the year, Christians around the world celebrating Advent are beginning the church year. We are beginning with the important affirmation: God came to us in Christ. Christ will also come again, just as he has promised.
You may have sung the famous carol, “O Come O Come Emanuel.” You may not know that this carol was inspired by prayers written around 1200 years ago! Many Christians around the world have used these prayers called the “The Great O Antiphons” (or just O Antiphons) as part of its evening prayer meetings. The O Antiphons were originally in Latin.
At LFP Church this season our message series, O Come O Come: From Promise to Presence will look at these prayers, along with texts primarily in the book of Isaiah that point to the human longings that are met in Jesus the Messiah. We pray this season can be fulfilling as we lean into the hopes and longings for Christ.
